
Summer Artists-in-Residence Application

Each summer we host a traditional musician in Columbia, Missouri to share authentic traditional Irish with our community through teaching and performance. We provide a stipend, lodging with a host family, travel expenses and a very memorable summer experience in a culturally rich community with terrific, welcoming people. This is an idea opportunity for a third or fourth year college student in traditional music education and performance, seeking some practical teaching and performance experience and a summer abroad.
As our artist-in-residence you are asked to
teach a combination of Irish traditional music, dance and Irish language (depending on your skills) to children and adults in weekly classes for 8 weeks.
teach some individual lessons
perform music (alone or with local musicians) in public venues, sometimes as a community service and others as paid gigs, to increase the exposure of traditional music in our area
CMCAA will pay all travel costs and provide housing during your stay plus a $1500 stipend for teaching classes. Additional income generated by paid gigs and private music lessons is your own.
Requirements
At least a minimal amount of experience teaching children and adults
Very proficient on a main melody instrument, which could be fiddle, flute, accordion, Uilleann pipes or harp
Able to teach at least one additional (folk) instrument (fiddle, flute, whistle, accordion, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, bodhran)
Great attitude and willingness to work with people of all ages, ability levels and learning styles.
At least one of these is also desirable, but not required:
Able to teach set or sean nos dance
Able to teach Irish language
Able to teach traditional singing
