An Evening of Irish Music
Linn Memorial United Methodist Church
(on the campus of Central Methodist University)
Fayette, MO

Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin, Irish musician and professor of music at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Eileen Gannon, World Champion Harper, present an evening of Irish on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in Linn Memorial United Methodist Church on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri.  The program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by CMU's Department of English.

Since penning his first piece in 1974 for the Clare Champion - an eyewitness account of the funeral of Galway accordion legend Joe Cooley - Dr. Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin has dedicated his career to promoting the preservation of Irish traditional music, folklife and culture. Author, ethnomusicologist, anthropologist and professional musician, he is currently the Jefferson Smurfit Corporation Professor of Irish Studies and Professor of Music at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He is the author of the highly respected A Pocket History of Irish Traditional Music (O’Brien Press, Dublin: 1998), now in its third edition.

Eileen Gannon is harp master from the St. Louis School of Music, Song and Dance.  A St. Louis native, she was the 2000 All-Ireland Senior Harp Champion. She was the first performer from the Midwest and only the third American to win this prestigious world title. Several of her students have also gone on to win honors in the All-Ireland competitions.

April 8 - 10, 2005
The St. Louis Tionol and Mississippi River Celtic Festival
have announced their lineup of teachers/performers and the schedule of events.

From the organizers:
This is our 8th Tionól and it promises to be top last year. Last year we had our best year ever and we have you, the participants, to thank. We asked for your opinions and have listened to your input. In particular, we heard that we need to try and make the sessions work better. Last year we tried a lunch time session which, although possibly too big, seemed to be a hit. We’re working on the sessions and will try to improve the experience.

We’re welcoming several new faces to Saint Louis this year. Piper, and pipe-maker, Mickey Dunne hails from Limerick. Mickey plays in a very open style reminiscent of players like Paddy Keenan and Johnny Doran. On fiddle, we’re delighted that Tommy Peoples will be joining us again. In addition, we finally were able to snag Dale Russ, a great fiddle player from the west coast. In addition to the recitation class we offered last year we’re offering a songwriting workshop with Mitzi MacDonald. Growing up in Nova Scotia, Mitzi is a talented musician with her own band several albums to her credit. Albert Alfonso, will be joining us to teach the bodhran class along with our own Chris Weddle. Kevin Henry, the great piper and flute player is coming down from Chicago. You may remember his recitation at last year’s concert which brought the house to its feet. Tommy Martin, John Carty, John Skelton, and Ged Foley will also be coming back.
