Saturday, July 26 - dinner and Irish music with Luck Penny at Wildwood Springs Lodge, Steelville

Wildwood Springs Lodge, a c.1920 hunting lodge set along the Maramec river in Steelville, has recently become one of Missouri's music hot spots! A weekend by the river with fine music is a great getaway and attracts people from St. Louis, Springfield and places much further away. In recent years they have had outstanding lineups that have included Leo Kottke, John Hartford, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Brewer & Shipley, Jimmie Fadden and Jeff Hanna and more. The very intimate house concert-like setting makes the shows all the more special.

Lodge owner Bob Bell has taken an interest in Irish music, too, and this Saturday Luck Penny will perform after dinner. Dinner and the show is $18.50, or stay overnight and bring instruments for a late night any-genre jam session on the pool deck. The dinner buffet and pastry bar is always fantastic!

For rates and their fall concert schedule, see www.wildwoodspringslodge.com

Photos from Irish Arts Week Posted

What a great week we had July 14-19 with our Irish Arts Week day camp and teen workshops! highlights included the traditional instrument sampler classes and loads of step and set dancing. The week was a great success and we're planning to do it all again next year!

The Columbia Missourian ran a nice article by Megan Rathfon about the week. It's linked from our web site main page. There aren't any photos in the web article, but there were some great ones in the print copy.

Thanks to everyone who came out for the July 19 concert and ceilidh at the ARC on July 19. It was a great evening of music and dancing. Thanks especially to Parks and Recreation for their assistance, and the City of Columbia for a small projects grant that made the event possible!

Lincoln University's Share in the Arts concert series

http://www.lincolnu.edu/~sita/

This season, Share in the Arts will present Mick Maloney's Irish-American Music and Dance Festival, (aka The Green Fields of America) March 25, 2004. In addition, their season lineup includes a Lewis and Clark Chataqua, the Dallas Black Dance Theatre, The Best Little Klezmer Band in Texas, Las Guitarras de Mexico, (traditional music from MExico), and the Jefferson City Symphony. Season tickets are only $45. We'll also be offering group rate tickets for just the Mick Maloney show through CMCAA.

Mick Maloney, musician, folklorist, performer and teacher, is a dynamo on wheels in the traditional music world. As a master of the Irish tenor banjo, he's influenced countless traditional musicians, but that's just the beginning. With a PhD in Irish folklore and a position as adjunct professor of Irish studies in the honors program at Villanova University, and director of the folklife center at International House in Philadelphia, his passion is teaching and sharing the folklore and music of Ireland through lectures, performances and writing. From initiating Irish Week at Augusta Heritage Center more than 20 years ago, to masterminding the Re-Imagining Ireland Conference this past May that included hundreds of musicians, scholars and politicians, Mick Maloney tirelessly works for the preservation and perpetuation of traditions in changing times.

For more info, read this great article about Mick from Dirty Linen folk music magazine http://www.dirtynelson.com/linen/feature/48mick.html

March 25 will definitely be a "must see" show! Put it on your calendar!
